Prof. Dr. Bartsch has about 20 years of experience in environmental risk assessment and management of GMO. He worked at the Aachen University of Technology from 1992-2002 in the experimental field of biosafety, including a research stay at UC Riverside [California] in 1998. Since 2002 he is senior advisor and acting head of the department 'Genetic Engineering' at Bundesamt für Verbraucherschutz und Lebensmittelsicherheit (BVL), the German Competent Authority according to Directive 2001/18/EC, in the field of GMO risk assessment and management. He served nine years as Member of the GMO Panel of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) from 2003-2012.
